Morrow Audio

MA7 Grand Reference

The MA7's are my best work, an all out version with 72 runs of wire in the cable structure. This offers an improvement over the MA6, resulting in even greater detail retrival as well as musical realism.

"The Grand Reference series offers an unlimited amount of detail, realism and presence to flow through your system. If you desire the last bit of information and the greatest emotional involvement with your music, the Grand Reference is a no-brainer and the only choice for the serious audiophile."

The Grand Reference series are the best of my work and offer the ultimate in music realism, detail retrieval and the uncanny ability to reveal the subtle tonal shadings between instruments, even instrument brands. The MA7 excels in all aspects of the musical presentation, soundstage and instrument separation, providing breathtaking realism. Read more below...

Design Theory...Problems With Popular Cable Designs:

The Morrow Audio cables differ in 3 major areas from most other popular and often expensive cable designs. As you read about this, you may realize that your cables have problems in these areas. Do not despair, you now qualify for a dramatic improvement in all areas of sound with the Morrow Audio line of cables. After hearing our properly designed cables, many of our customers replaced the ones they had with our complete cable product line.

The 3 major design flaws in popular cables...

1. Cables That Use Stranded Wire:
In stranded wire designs, the strands touch each other hundreds of times at various points along the length of the wire, causing the signal to jump from strand to strand instead of flowing through a continuum. The result is a diode effect (like little mV Diodes) at each point where the strands come into contact, causing distortion of the signal; blurring imaging, soundstage cues, etc.

Another explanation of the diode effect is oxide forming between the strands which encourage a non-linear conduction. At the points where this occurs, actual RF detection can occur, turning your cable into a radio; receiving, detecting and injection RF signal and distortions into your music signal.

In my experience with stranded cable, where each single conductor is made from several strands, not insulated from each other, there imparts an unpleasant harshness and brightness to the sound as well as a bloated and non-defined bass.

Diode effect in cable

The Morrow Audio Design:
Morrow Audio signal cables use ONLY solid core wire, NEVER stranded. We eliminate all diode effects by using only solid core wire. You will hear much more information in your music that was lost from the smearing effect that stranded wire produces.

Some of our models contain multiple runs of wire. They are mono strands, individually insulated from each other. In the case of our MA2 Reference interconnect, these multiple runs yield a more detailed sound. The speaker cables, out of power handling necessity, also contain these multiple runs of wire.

c"I'm experiencing a realism that I was missing.  The sound stage is much larger and more open. Detail is better than ever and the sound is extremely clean, clear and concise. Importantly, it is neutral and not tainted.  The dynamics are not over exaggerated but tight and clean.  I feel like I'm hearing what the artists intended in their music presentation.  In the world of audio you don't know what your missing until you hear what you were missing."

2. Cables That Use Large Gauge Wire:
Different frequencies tend to ride at various depths in the wire structure; the highs, mids and lows tend to separate which cause time and phase errors in the signal. This is commonly known as the "skin effect". When a large gauge wire is used, this problem is even greater, resulting in phase and timing errors. The soundstage is reduced, instrument timbre is distorted. See photo below...

Skin effect in wire

The Morrow Audio Design:
Morrow Audio signal cables ONLY use a small gauge wire. The different frequencies ride at the same plane in the wire, resulting in less phase and timing errors. A more accurate sound is the result.
The soundstage is huge, instrument timber is accurate, it seems like the performers are in your room.

c"I retired as an electrical engineer 15 years ago and this cable was a breakthrough for me. I was hearing a wide, deep soundstage, with really good but not over-etched detail, with instruments and voices sounding so much more real than ever. Bass was very clear, mids were delightful, and highs were clean."

3. Cables That Use Heavy Insulators:
Some cable designs use large cable jackets or even heavy insulators to insulate their cable.

Inside common cable designs are internal conductors with an extruded insulation of some sort. The insulation material is in close and immediate contact with the conductor along its entire length. One of these conductors might be in the form of a wire mesh that surrounds the center conductor, acting as a shield from RFI.

Wrapped around all this is the outer casing of the cable, made out of rubber, PVC, Teflon or some other material.

These insulation elements all form the dielectric of the wire, which has a tendency to absorb and release energy to and from the conductors. This occurrence produces a negative sonic affect; smearing of the signal and other distortions. The greater the number of insulating layers there are, the greater this distortion will be. The thickness of these layers is also a factor of concern, with thicker layers being the worst.

Have you ever heard of speaker cable lifts? They are little stands that lift the cables off the floor, improving the sound. The improvement comes by keeping the electrical field from reflecting back into the cable off the floor. Why then do cable manufacturers apply decorative mesh, thick insulations and other signal distorting elements in their design?

The Morrow Audio Design:
Morrow Audio cables DO NOT use heavy insulators. Each strand of wire incorporates a very thin insulation and are held together within a thin nylon mesh, except for the MA1 which is open due to its design. This allows the least amount of reflection back into the cable, retaining the quality of the music you love.

With the Morrow Audio cables, your music will flow unhindered, resulting in greater realism as well as a longer and more enjoyable listening session. Those who have have heard our cables describe it as a "Listening Experience".

c"I have been mixing live sound close to 20 years as well as gone through many sound systems over the past 35 years. I have wasted away a lot of money trying to achieve the sound as if one was playing an instrument live. These cables do just that! They don't add any coloration to the music. You feel & hear the real soul of the instruments and vocals. I have had other sound engineers in my home to listen to these cables. Their mouths would drop open & thay would have big smiles on their faces! Save your money. Buy these cables!"

Our Factory & The Equipment We Use To Evaluate Our Cables:

Designing and building cables is a tricky business, requiring just the right balance of gauge, wire type and dielectric. It would be foolish to test our designs on a mediocre system. At Morrow Audio, we have only the best in our listening/ testing room, insuring that whatever system our cables go into, that they will provide great satisfaction and musicality!

Our factory likewise provides a good work enviornment for assembly, where each and every cable is handmade by only the best cable technicians, assuring a high level of quality and control.

c"I am REALLY impressed with the level of detail these provide. Case in point... playing Jim Messina's newer CD "Under a Mojito Moon", I am now CLEARLY hearing backgound percussion instruments at a level of clarity that were simply not there before (smeared). I also thought psycho-acoustically I was hearing mild distortion thru a right channel midrange, after replay it happed to be the reverberation of an ending note of an acoustic guitar string inside the body of the instrument, which blew me away. Soundstage improved dramatically and bass is a little better defined."

Description & Applications

The typical order is for a pair of interconnect cables, meaning one right channel and one left channel cable. Single cables are also available by clicking the appropriate add to cart icon. The cables are offered in RCA or balanced versions. Balanced to RCA versions are also available.

Price shown is for the standard length of a 1 meter pair. Longer lengths are available and selectable in the shopping cart as well as termination upgrades and breakin service.

The MA7 consist of 72 runs of solid core, small gauge, silver coated copper wire which is then silver soldered to the termination of choice. Silver coated copper wire was chosen for the excellent balance of sound that it provides. The cable has an attractive appearance and possess excellent RFI and noise rejection. That cable is also flexible and easy to manage.

Applications are multiple, such as for hooking up a CD player, preamp, integrated amplifier, power amplifiers, etc. Our "MA" series interconnects are NOT designed to be used from a turntable to phono preamp. Use our "PH" series phono cables for such applications. You can use the "MA" series from your phono preamp output to line stage preamp and onward.

What Are the Differences Between Models?

The basic differences between models are the number of wires within the cable structure. As you move up the line, the greater number of wires allow a likewise greater amount of subtleties and details to come through. The soundstage and separation of instruments within that soundstage also increases. The range is from the MA1, which has 2 runs of wire, to the MA7, which has 72 runs of wire within.

Being hand made, our cables require a tremendous amount of labor to build. Despite this we have continued to keep the cost down as far as possible, offering great value as well as an unforgettable musical experience.

c"Sound stage and details have reached new levels.  The music is richer, revealing unheard vocal styling's and instrumental tones on long standing favorite recordings that I thought I “knew”.  I don’t think I could be more impressed and pleased."
