Bob Bitter: Response to a question comparing the 300B1S to the Promitheus:

Question...
"I currently own a pair of Larry Moore 300B mono amps and am looking to upgrade. I was looking at the Morrows and the Promethius amps. I've emailed Nicholas at Promethius about reviews and he has none. Where should my money go?"

Bob's Response:
"While I don't have any specific experience with the Promitheus amps, you can see where I chose to spend my money.

I went with Mike Morrow's amps for a number of reasons:

1. Mike is based here in the U.S. in close proximity to me, so maintenance and troubleshooting will be much more convenient than dealing with a product made in Malaysia.

2. Early in 2007, I had an opportunity to hear Mike's audio system, comprised almost entirely of components he has personally designed and built. It was clear to me based on that experience that Mike really knows what he is doing and that he has spent a lot of time tweaking and developing his designs. By the way, Mike regards his 300B1S split-chassis monoblocks as his crowning achievement.

3. Mike's amplifier design is much more fully evolved than the amps that Nicholas Chua has begun to build. I have no doubt that Nicholas will be able to achieve some excellent sounding amplifiers, and, with his ability to design and wind his own transformers, he might, eventually, be able to exceed the performance of Mike Morrow's transformer-coupled amp design. However, I felt more comfortable going with a design that Mike Morrow has been developing for years as opposed to what amounts to a prototype design at Promitheus.

I can tell you that I am very pleased with the sound of the Morrow amps I am running in my SET system. They overcome a lot of problems inherent in SET designs in that they achieve excellent frequency extension at both frequency extremes and the amps are incredibly quiet. There is literally no noise audible in my system with the amps idling and your ear placed next to the drivers. I have not personally experienced another SET amplifier that is capable of this feat. This is a testament to Mike's years of effort in optimizing his grounding scheme and tweaking the amplifier to achieve this level of performance.

I should mention that I have found Mike Morrow to be very , very responsive. He delivers on his commitments and offers excellent customer service. If you commission Mike to build an amplifier for you, you can expect that he will keep you posted over the course of the time it takes to build the amps with updates regarding the progress, including pictures if you are interested.

He will also complete the amps within days of the lead time that he initially commits to you.

I have also found Nicholas Chua at Promitheus to be reliable and honest; however, his responsiveness is not at the Morrow Audio level due, in part, to the extreme difference in time zone and the fact that Nicholas's business has grown at a rate that makes it difficult for him to reply to e-mail on a timely basis. Nicholas will eventually deliver to you what he commits, but the timeframe will likely stretch noticeably beyond his initial estimate.

This summarizes my perspective on the choice you are making. If you have any questions regarding the Morrow amps, I would encourage you to contact Mike Morrow by telephone. I have found him to be very approachable and patient."

Benny Cheung, Hong Kong:
"Dear Mike,

Good news and congratulations! My two friends have just auditioned your amplifier. Both of them have more than 25 years of listening to Hi-Fi and music. In short, if 5 stars is full mark, both of my friends rate your amplifier a 4.5 stars. I have said that not many amplifiers could surpass my old Leak TL12.1. Your amplifier is better than the Leak musically. But be sure that the tube should be the TJ300, NOT the JJ300B.

One of them even said: "I don't want to talk about the sound of the Morrow Audio amplifier because I benefit more from simply enjoying it."

Cheers, Benny

Benny later wrote in an online review on Audiogon:

"Around 4 months ago I surfed the Internet and the look of the Morrow Audio 300B1S SET Monoblocks interested me. This company is an unknown one in the audio industry and its owner Mr. Morrow has never been in the audio magazine. However its 300B Amp is not cheap and I wonder how it sounds and how it can compete in this killing field of Hi-Fi equipment. Since I like taking risk, I then tried my luck to spend big buck on this “Never Heard” 300B.

2 months ago it arrived and I think it has already run-in now. I then invited two friends to join the audition; both of them have more than 25 years of listening to Hi-Fi and music. They have had extensive listening experience on expensive equipments such as Mark Levision, Jadis, Mackintosh...

The Morrow Audio 300B1S SET Monoblocks, together with the TJ 300B Mesh Plate (NOT JJ300) delivers a really 3D picture of individual musical instruments. The image is sharp, pinpoint and in focus that you could expect only from very expensive solid state Amp. But the sound is sweet and warm and beautiful that you could only expect from very expensive tube Amp. The harmonic and “air” is excellent and the overall balance is superb.

When we listen to human voice, it is the voice of a live singer. You can “see” the singer’s throat is moving. The Steinway sounds of the Steinway, NOT from a Yamaha. You could even "smell" the wood of the piano. You can feel the strings of the violin and guitar are vibrating. The overall sound is very real and you would feel you are in the concert hall, not listening to electronics. One of my friends just wanted to close his eyes and listen. He even said: "I don't want to talk about the sound of the Morrow Audio amplifier because I benefit more from simply enjoying it."

Of course, it has some weakness. Brass instruments are not brass and metallic enough. And the bass in not really deep for my 12 inches Tannoy Monitor Gold in the Lancester cabinet. **

In short, if 5 stars is full mark, both of my friends rate the Morrow Audio 300B1S SET Monoblocks a 4.5 stars. I think my taking a risk gets my reward.

I don't know Mr. Morrow personally but I think he deserves my appreciation. Good work!"

My equipment:
CD: CEC belt drive and CEC decoder
Pre-amp: Vintage Fisher 80C with Telefonken Tube
Amp: Morrow 300B1 SET Monoblock with TJ 300 B Mesh Plate
Speaker: 12 inches Tannoy Monitor Gold in Lancester cabinet

** Please note that the model Benny bought is before we implemented an interstage transformer in our design, which replaced the Teflon coupling capacitor. The reproduction of brass instruments described is improved with this change. Also, bass reproduction is highly dependant upon the speakers chosen.
